Most artists have a studio in their homes.
I have a home in my studio.
I always have a number of projects in the works simultaneously, and they tend to take up a lot of space.
I’ve lived in Central Florida since I was three years old. The Italian restaurant in Thornton Park that looks like it could have once been a gas station, was my grandfather’s.
My first clay instructor was Helen Bennett (before Bennett Pottery Supply). But it was my second clay experience that hooked my life to this earthy material. Grady Kimsey’s sheer exuberance for life and art spoke to me then and has influenced me ever since.
Change happens
During my 28-year marriage, I raised one active, sports-driven son, and held a sales job with an agricultural firm that fit me perfectly. I took any clay class I could fit in, but that meant a few years on and more than a few off.
In 2003, my son was an adult, and my two long-term relationships—marriage and career—both ended abruptly. At the time I was crushed. But I could soon see that I had been set free to create a new life, one that fully embraced my art. I’m a strong believer in second chances, second careers, and the ability of anyone to re-purpose themselves!
In 2006 I was introduced to the Crealde School of Art. The setting, the people, and especially the instruction have been more than inspirational. While at Crealde, I have been able to develop many of my interests, and you can see these reflected in my work.
From Vince Sansone I’ve learned about design and how it influences just about everything. From David Cumbie, I’ve learned how important it is to know someone who can do just about anything as well as what products to use. From Doug Bringle, I continue to learn what clay can do—as well as what not to expect!
